The survey for this map was made on the outward voyage of Lord Macartney's embassy to China and shows the entrance to Turon Harbour – Da Nang in modern Vietnam – and the course of the brig HMS Jackall
a couple of small holes at fold intersections
reduced from the highly accurate Ordnance Survey
Mercator became aware of the Butlers wars of the 1560s and 1570s - power struggles between two of the leading Anglo-Irish families (the Butlers and the Fitzgeralds) in Elizabethan Ireland - and the subsequent claims of the adventurer Sir Peter Carew
